Embassy of Sri Lanka in Yangon celebrates the 77th Anniversary of Independence of Sri Lanka

 

The 77th Anniversary of Independence of Sri Lanka was commemorated by the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Yangon, Myanmar on Tuesday, 4th February 2025, on the lawns of the Embassy, with the participation of the Sri Lankan community in Myanmar, staff of the Embassy and their family members.

A Buddha Puja and offering of Heel Dana, in the early morning and Sanghika Dana in the noon for the Venerable Theros, who attended the event, was conducted, including for the five Myanmar Theros, with Most Ven. Aggamaha Panditha Nagasenabhivamsa Thero, and a group of six Theros, who arrived from Sri Lanka, including Aukana Raja Maha Vihara Nayaka, Most Ven. Sastrawelliye Dhammakiththi Thero.

The official ceremony started with hoisting of the National Flag, singing of the National Anthem, and reciting of Jayamangala Gatha. The two minute silence was observed, remembering the fallen heroes. The religious dignitaries including Maha Sangha, and Hindu, Islam and Christian Priests, conducted multifaith religious observances, invoking blessings to the Country, government and the people. The messages of the President, Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs were read.

In her speech, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Myanmar, Prabashini Ponnamperuma, after welcoming the gathering, explained the development initiatives and policy directives of the government, the official work conducted by the Embassy and achievements, during the past year. She also provided a brief explanation of one of the major programmes of the government, “Clean Sri Lanka”, using a power point presentation.

The cultural performance by the Cultural Troupe of Aukana Rajamaha Viharaya, Sri Lanka, led by the veteran dancer and Dancing Instructor of Galnewa Maha Vidyalaya, Mr. Pradeep Kumarasinghe, added vibrance and colour to the event. The event concluded with serving traditional Sri Lankan cuisine to all the attendees and offering gifts and tokens to the performers.
